I was an English major, but recently switched to our new major called Communications/English with a Journalism emphasis.
I would look into a minor/certificate in Technical Writing (aka Technical Communication.) It hones the ability to write clearly and concisely, and teaches many valuable editing skills. It’s also a huge plus for just about any place you apply. The nice thing is that you’re probably already taking several of the required classes. Here’s a link to the one I did, to give you an idea:http://registrar.boisestate.edu/Catalogs…
Business, Marketing, Advertising and Communications would also be great minors. Good luck!

Perhaps creative media, or a minor in a subject in which you are interested such as business, art/fashion or some other area. You might also want jounalism. Check the classes for these and see what interests you.
Journalism would be a good minor because, while it still deals with writing, it’s a totally different kind of writing. It would provide you the opportunity to learn different styles of writing, such as magazine-type writing, business writing, technical writing, etc., which are not always offered in English Departments. You could learn other reporting styles, AP style and editing that is used in the publishing world. If you don’t want to do Journalism, then at least take a Copy Editing course from the Journalism Dept. (it’s a requirement for our English majors).
You could also do an emphasis in Advertising/Marketing, which would offer the job opportunities while you look for a job in publishing. However, if you’re not interested in that, then go for Spanish. Many publishers now need people fluent in Spanish to update their materials and meet the needs of that growing sector of readers.
In the end, however, unless your school requires you to, you don’t need a minor…
