English courses are always useful, you may want to major in English, or a media related area, there are no specific requirements and it is usually because they are funny and creative and fit in well with the tone of the show they work on. You would need some experience before approaching the high up shows, try going for smaller projects first, often the College can help there. The main thing to remember is a lot of writers do not start off doing it for a living, Ian Maxtone-Graham (Simpsons writer) worked at an aquatic research facility, and several are known for previous work in advertising. If you know straight away that you want to do this though, then fit lots of different courses in to see what areas of other jobs you like, just in case.
edit: Also try and help in College plays and things, in a script writing/screenwriting part as it helps to have a varied background (not just comedy).
